There are a lot of things we take for granted, but one of our biggest offenses is the modern day smart phone. It’s gotten to the point where the word “smart” isn’t used when describe these mini-computer. Smart phones have become so common that it’s unusual to see a phone without a touch screen. It’s hard to believe that these miracles in our hands have become so common.
We’ve become so accustomed to the modern day cell phones; we sometimes forget that they’re used for talking. It seems like every mobile device includes a phone, camera, mp3 player, organizer, pager, emailing device, web browser, and gaming system. Ten years ago digital cameras use to be a luxury; now it’s expected. It’s almost gotten to the point that we don’t need a talking plan, date would be good enough.
It’s mind boggling how fast technology has changed. There was a time when video chatting was thought to be something we would only see in movies, now most phones have it. Voice mail is another luxury we take for granted. A decade ago some houses didn’t have answering machines, now they’re in everyone’s pocket.
One of the biggest changes with technology is the popularity of text messages; for some, phone calls are almost inconvenient. A text message allows you to avoid the pleasantries that come along with talking to someone directly. With texting you can get to the meat of the subject, it takes away the immediacy of a phone call. If you need to send someone a message that doesn’t need to be returned right away, text messaging is the way to go.
Smart phones have given a hand in parenting. Television was once called the replacement babysitter. When online streaming sites are mobile, so are all your child’s favorite television shows. Also, with thousands of apps at your fingertips there is always something to do.
Technology changes a little every day and it’s just going to keep improving a little more every day. Because of the advances in cell phones we have almost everything in the palms of our hands. Although it may be hard to imagine how much things have changed you should ask yourself… “When was the last time you found yourself with nothing to do?”
