The Chick-Flick Bait-n-Switch: Getting Him to Watch the Films You Love

The Chick-Flick Bait-n-Switch: Getting Him to Watch the Films You Love

A frequent disagreement in relationships is what to watch. Since the arrival of theaters, couples have been going to movies only one side wants to see. Surprisingly, sometimes both sides enjoy themselves. We’ve seen many boyfriends get dragged to “chick-flicks” only to come out saying “That wasn’t too bad.”

The following is a list of movies that couples may be able to watch together; these won’t always work, but it may lead to more bonding and fewer arguments.

Love Actually – “It’s kind of like Crash…”

The title alone may send your significant other to their Transformers box set, but they’d be wrong to do so. Love Actually has a surprising amount of depth and is quite entertainingWith several stories woven into a single narrative, Love Actually is easy to follow and surprisingly enjoyable. With it’s intertwining stories, you may think of it as a lighthearted version of Crash. It’s a chick-flick, but a really good chick-flick.

Eclipse – “I swear, if you hate this you don’t have to watch the rest.”

So you want to get your boyfriend into the world of Twilight; the odds of that happening are very slim, starting with Eclipsemay give you a fighting chance. For most men, Twilight and New Moon are extremely tedious; unless you’re a little invested, they’re hard to recommend. Eclipse is faster paced and has a lot more action. Ignore the first two movies and start with the third. Remember, Breaking Dawnis coming out soon; this may improve your odds of bringing him along.

Sex and the City – “You know the sex comedies you love so much? Well….”

Honestly, this one is a tough sell. Sex and the City is known as a series written for women. In many ways, Sex and the City is similar to some of your boyfriend’s favorite movies if written for a female audience. Kevin Smith (writer and director of Clerks, Chasing Amy, and Dogma) has compared the T.V. series to his own work. It’s basically the dirty humor you’d see in a Judd Apatow movie if it was written with women in mind. If your boyfriend doesn’t hate the Sex and the City (he’ll never admit falling in love) it may be in your best interest to pretend the sequel doesn’t exist, pop in the HBO box set; even die-hard fans were a little disappointed by the second installment.

Whether you’re a married movie-goer or courting couch potato, choosing a movie can be difficult. Relationships are full of blowups and differences of opinion; hopefully this list will create more quality time and less arguments.
