One of the key phrases that everyone should live by (and is also talked about the most) is the phrase, “Live in the moment”. This briefly describes how to maintain a positive outlook at all times, no matter what is going on around us. When we end our worry about the past or our fear about the future, we concentrate on the moments that are around us in the NOW. We should remember that these moments will only happen once.
A not-so-pleasant aspect of living your life in the moment is when the moment is frankly, terrible. A stressful situation like a breakup, a job loss, or dealing with a personal struggle is the backdrop for most people to start concentrating those negative feelings on everything around them. Think about it…the last time you were experiencing a negative event in your life, didn’t everything else seem terrible as well? Those feelings of anger and sadness reflect on everything you do, and all of a sudden people in the café aren’t moving fast enough, that sweater is too ugly, and your hair just won’t look right, no matter how many times you fix it.
Finding a way to live in the moment while still experiencing negative events is a skill that’s hard to master at first, but you can definitely “fake it till you feel it”. The next time a negative event or stressful situation comes up, appreciate those feelings, but then concentrate on the present moment. Is your coffee really bitter, or are you just focusing on those negative energies in your mind? Really have a moment to take a deep breath, and find the truth in the events around you. Exercising, maintaining a healthy eating pattern, meditating, writing, or breathing in fresh air, all help you to get an honest grip on the truth around you, helping you focus on the present moment, while still being aware of your feelings.
