Kings of Unusual Hills: Not-So-Common Competitions

Every competition deserves a champion. No matter how unusual a skill is, there’s someone out there trying to be the best. It doesn’t matter if the talent is simple or disgusting, if you can make it into a tournament there’s a good chance someone already has. The following is a list of unusual events that have sparked the interest of a few individuals.

SPAM Cook-off: Many people wouldn’t think of SPAM to be a delicacy; a few culinary artist are working hard to change their minds. Austin, Texas has an annual Pandemonious Potted Pork Festival. Otherwise known as SPAMARAMA, groups of professional chefs and amateur cooks compete to create the most creative SPAM concoction. Some extraordinary examples are SPAM Cordon Bleu, SPAM Wedding Cake, and Moo Goo Gai SPAM.

Mobile Phone Throwing Competition: Originally started in Finland, groups of people flock together to see who can chuck their phone the furthest. Contestants are judged on distance, technique, and creativity.

Odor-Eaters Rotten Sneakers Competition: Available to children ages 5-15 (sorry adults), kids are able to wear their worst pair of sneakers and are judged on how offensive they smell. Winners are treated to cash prizes and gift baskets filled with Odor-Eaters brand products. Everyone that enters gets a free hat and T-Shirt.

World RPS Competition (Rock-Paper-Scissors): If you remember the rules to this timely schoolyard game/decision-maker, you’ll remember how to play this world champion sport. The RPS Society takes Rock-Paper-Scissors to a higher level. Although a lot of people would argue that this is a game based on luck, there is a surprising amount of strategy put into each round. Also, if RPS was all about luck it’d be hard to explain how people can become multi-champions.

Lawn Mower Racing: Although popular in America, this sport’s surprising origin is located in West Sussex, England. Ironically the lawn mowers don’t have any blades (done for safety) and are usually driven on tracks without grass.

Vidalia Onion Eating Contest: Contestants have three minutes to eat as many onions as they can. There are three different age groups. With a prize of $100, you’ll assume that most people do this for bragging rights.

China’s Kissing Competition: A lot of people would take quality of quantity; China’s kissing competition is a good example of this. Although a lot of kissing competitions are judged on time and duration, China sets their sights on creativity. A couple wins by performing the most elaborate kiss, unfortunately the age limit only goes to 80.
