Eating Healthy On the Cheap

Eating Healthy On the Cheap

Everyone wants two things in their kitchen: healthy food, and lots of food. However, living on a student or a young adult’s budget usually doesn’t afford those luxuries. There are many ways though to stock your fridge with food that is both healthy and cheap!

Buy Bulk

Everything is cheaper bulk. EVERYTHING. You can get a bag of rice for $6 and the same amount of bulk rice for probably $2. A huge bag of bulk oatmeal is $2 as opposed to the almost $10 box of boxed oatmeal. Everything is available through bulk, from rices to oats to dried fruits to trail mix to nuts to seeds. Even seaweed, pasta, teas, spices and flours are available through bulk. Find these bulk stations at most health food or organic food shop, as well as many large grocery stores.

Load Up Your Freezer

The main way to keep a stocked fridge is to actually have a stocked freezer. Because these foods won’t spoil, you can have more at once in your kitchen. Frozen food is also a lot cheaper. Now, this doesn’t mean stock your fridge with premade frozen dinners and ice cream—instead buy organic , frozen fruits and vegetables, bags of organic spinach or kale, bananas, local chicken or fish, freshly made soup, frozen pasta, and so much more!

Other tips:

-Stock up on large bags of whole wheat or rice pasta.

-Need tomato sauce for your pasta? Purchase organic canned tomatoes and blend with olive oil, salt, pepper, and herbs, or purchase canned tomato sauce, instead of in the jar.

-Sweet Potatoes are both nutritious and delicious. A bag of sweet potatoes is also cheap and contains at least 5-6.

-Bags of kale or spinach are easily frozen, as well as corn tortillas or bread.

-Cheap bananas, frozen and blended together make a delicious low-fat dessert.
