3 DIY Moisturizers for Different Skin Types

Most skin products sold in stores today are filled with artificial preservatives and other chemicals that are not good for skin — moisturizers are no exception.  In this industry inundated with toxin skin products, it can be challenging to find something natural for you skin, especially for your specific skin type. But sometimes, all you have to do is look around your kitchen.

While there are some really great natural organic products out there that are safe for your skin, they don’t always match your skin’s needs. The best solution to the chemical crisis is to simply make your own, #DIY. There is no better way to be ensure that you are not putting chemicals into your skin, plus it can save you a lot of money!

Below are my top favorite natural moisturizers that need no preparation:

Carrier oils: coconut, olive, almond and rosehip

Carrier oils are by far my favorite natural moisturizers. Carrier oils have a million uses, and healing your dry skin is one of them. Already the base of many store bought moisturizers, these oils are all the most effective when used alone. Other chemicals can actually counteract the natural power of the oil, so make sure whatever you choose is 100% natural with no additives.

Raw Honey

Raw honey is my go-to natural moisturizer because it can be easy applied right to the problem areas. You can either rub in it and leave it or massage it into the skin for 3-4 minutes and then rinse it off. Whatever you choose, you will have noticeably softer skin with regular use.

Aloe Vera

If you haven’t already done so, go ahead and purchase a small aloe vera plant for your home. It will change your life. When you’re feeling dry just cut off one of the plant’s tentacles and squeeze the gel out. Make sure the gel is a clear, jelly-like substance — not yellowish (this is aloe latex). And don’t worry about ruining your plant, aloe vera is extremely sturdy and will seal itself back up to keep growing.

Masks are also a great way to give your skin some extra moisture. I highly recommend applying moisturizing facial masks after using a natural facial scrub such as a sugar or salt scrub. The scrub will exfoliate the skin, allowing the mask to moisturize it better. Here are some quick and easy moisturizing masks recipes you can make in less than 5 minutes:

Cucumber Aloe Vera Mask // Dry Skin Types

Ingredients:

1 cucumber – preferably organic

2 tbsp Aloe Vera

Application:

1. Peel the cucumber and place it in a blender with two tbsp of aloe vera.

2. Blend ingredients together until they form into a thick consistent mixture — should be nice and pasty.

3. Spread paste all over the face. Let sit for 30 minutes – I know it seems like forever, so relax, read a book or do some adult coloring.

4. Rinse off the mask with cold water, pat skin to dry and apply your favorite natural moisturizer. Good to go!

Honey Avocado Mask // All Skin Types

Ingredients:

½ ripe, fresh avocado – preferably organic

¼ cup raw honey

Application:

1. In a bowl, mash 1/2 of a very ripe avocado into a creamy pulp.

2. Stir in 1/4 cup of honey until it forms a smooth paste.

3. Apply onto your face, let sit for 10 minutes. Feel free to eat the other half of that avocado while you wait.

4. Rinse it off your face with the help of a cool washcloth, pat dry.

Egg White Mask // Oily Skin Types

Ingredients:

1 large egg

Application:

1. Crack egg and separate the egg white.

2. Beat egg white with fork until frothy.

3. Apply to your face and let dry. Keep still for this one, close your eyes and think happy thoughts!

4. Rinse off with cold water, pat dry. I recommend waiting an hour after this treatment before applying your favorite natural moisturizer.

***Looking for a more animal-friendly alternative for this oily skin mask? Try mixing together 1 mashed ripe banana, 1 tbsp of honey and the juice from half of a large lemon. Slather the mix onto your face and let it sit for 10 minutes, rinse with cold water and pat dry.
